I used to have this long list of restaurants that I’ve always wanted to go to, and for a long time I would always make excuses as to why I couldn’t go. One main reason was money, I’m a single mom so things always pop up, they girls may need something for school, or new clothes or just simply taking them out to spend quality time with them, although recently they would rather spend time with their friends 🙁 , either way , money just flies out of my hands. One day I went out for drinks and I spent a whole lot, like always lol, and for some reason I never have an issue with that, but then I started thinking that instead of splurging on drinks, I can use that money to finally hit up my dream restaurants. With that in mind, I called up my sisters and told them that I would like to go to one of my dream restaurants at least once a month or the very least every 2 months, and that I would write about it and post it. My sisters were on board, they loved that idea.
The first restaurant I chose was Bobby Flay’s, Gato. I love me some Bobby Flay!! I can never get enough of him on TV and I always wanted to go and actually eat his food. I admire the way he came up in the business. He dropped out of high school ( I don’t recommend anyone doing that though) and started working in restaurants, he found he loved it and that he was a natural, he later on attended the French Culinary institute, after a few stints in the business, he actually left the restaurant business for a while and came back to find his niche in southwestern cuisine , and his career started to take off from there. He has a few cookbooks and I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t own all of them but I did buy his newest one, Brunch at Bobby’s, its a great cookbook, I’ve tried some of his stuff and it all came out amazing, if you don’t own that book and you love brunch then I highly recommend that you buy it, brunch will never be the same! anywayz back to Gato..
Gato is Bobby Flay’s foray into Mediterranean food and drinks. Its a casual restaurant located on Lafayette street in NYC and he named it Gato after a cat that walked over his feet while he was waiting for the real estate broker to show him the space for the first time. I thought it was because he loved cats, he does have one named Nacho, that actually has his own Instagram page lol. The place is gorgeous and sexy as hell!! the lights are dim and each table has candles, I felt so fancy sitting there, Gato isn’t fancy at all , its really casual but I felt special just walking in. There is this beautiful bar in the middle of the restaurant and he has an open kitchen and of course I sat in the perfect place where I can look at all the cooks in the kitchen. I couldn’t help daydreaming about working in that kitchen 🙂 I was so giddy, my sisters were laughing at me but I didn’t care I was just so happy to be there.
The first thing we ordered were drinks, well my sister Angerine and I did, our baby sister Eilene hardly drinks, so she had a Shirley temple. I had the Sophie, which was named after his daughter, I just had to get it . Angerine got the Nico, both drinks were phenomenal , the bartender surely knows his stuff.
Next up were appetizers, we decided on the bacon crostini with charred scallion ricotta and garlic oil, it was so freaking good!! and the Gato Spreads, his take on hummus. The assortment of 3 spreads were , greek yogurt with charred green chile pesto, chick pea with meyer lemon and smoked paprika, and white bean with feta, garlic and a walnut piquillo relish. The 3 spreads did not disappoint, each one was so heavenly and omg that homemade pita bread was out of this world!! it was so warm and fluffy, we ordered extra, it was that good!
Next up were our entrees and vegetables. I ordered the Kale and Wild Mushroom Paella with crispy artichokes and a beautiful sunny side egg in the middle, the waiter mixed it up at the table so my pic doesn’t have the beautiful egg on top, I forgot to take a pic of it before he did that, I was just so excited when it came lol. Its a vegetarian favorite and the most popular dish in the restaurant, and with the first bite I clearly knew why. Angerine ordered the Rabbit with fregula sarda, pine nuts, currants , crispy ham and carrot hot sauce. It was exquisite, the rabbit was succulent and the fregula was so good, who knew fregula can be that good! well Bobby knew lol . Eilene ordered the Porterhouse Pork Chop with tomato pan juices, romesco and polenta. The pork chop was huge !! it was perfectly cooked and juicy, we have never had polenta before and I have to say I’m in love. Eilene was determined to finish the whole thing, even though she was getting full and I don’t blame her one bit!

For the veggies we ordered the crispy potatoes with a poached egg, smoked paprika and parmigiana cheese, the Roasted cauliflower with padron peppers and agrodolce, and the charred carrots with parsnip chips, harissa, mint and yogurt. it was all so good!! if I can make my veggies like Bobby, then maybe my youngest daughter might eat more of it lol.
Lastly we ordered desserts. If you know me then, you know I never order desserts, but since this was Bobby Flay’s restaurant I just had to and I’m so glad I did. I got the nectarine crostata with gelato, this dessert forever changed my mind on cooked fruit, I have never, ever liked my fruit warm until now, and Angerine got the dark chocolate polenta cake with chocolate hazelnut sauce and hazelnut crunch gelato. Her dessert was so damn sexy!! words can not describe it, it was orgasmic!!. Eilene opted out of dessert, she was too full from that delicious porterhouse pork chop, it didn’t stop her from tasting ours though lol.

Before we got the check, they served us complimentary homemade biscotti and sherry , I have no idea if they do that for everyone but I’d like to think that they knew I was so excited to be there ( I couldn’t hide it ) that they wanted our meal to be extra, extra special, it may not be the case but in my head that’s what it is lol.. Let me tell you, that biscotti was amazing and so was the sherry, I drank Eilene’s sherry cuz she’s not a drinker, and I so am:-)
Before we left I had to see the bathroom and lets be honest, I had to use it, my bladder has not been the same since I’ve had kids lol, anywayz , it was beautiful of course, so I just I had to take a selfie lol
I’m so glad we went to Gato, it didn’t break the bank, and if it did I wouldn’t have cared, every penny was well spent. I’m blessed to have been able to share that experience with my sisters, when we were younger they used to get on my damn nerves, but somehow they became 2 of my closest friends and I look forward to crossing more of my dream restaurants off my list with them 🙂
P.S. Chica you need to come down to NYC so we can eat there together!!Share This:
